‘ve compiled a short list of the Linux programs I use, which you could use an open-source alternative to whatever Windows program you’re used to. I dare you to make a comparison of program size, product cost (
), and speed.
- OpenOffice
- The GIMP
- Blender (blender)
- Hugin Panorama Creator (hugin)
- Filelight (filelight)
- Gjiten (gjiten)
- GnomeBaker (gnomebaker)
- Brasero
- Battle Tanks
- Open Movie Editor (openmovieeditor)
- Deluge Bittorrent Client (deluge)
In Ubuntu, the first two are installed by default, and the others can be installed with a few clicks of the mouse through Synaptic Package Manager or in Applications > Add/remove… Although I would suggest you learn to use the command line, it’s even faster:
- Open terminal.
- Type
sudo aptitude install blender
Just replace “blender” with the name of the package you want to install (package names in parentheses).
Games
Frozen Bubble (frozen-bubble)
Installation: Same as above
